PLANNING FOR SUCCESS: BUILDING A HIGH-PERFORMING FUNDRAISING OPERATION
Presented by: Lorna Malcolm, Associate Dean for Institutional Advancement, City University of New York
You’ll learn more about managing department activity, including:
- Developing your fundraising plan and calendar
- Data and finance systems
- Research, recognition, acceptance and acknowledgement policies and procedure
Lorna A. Malcolm has more than 25 years of leadership in higher education and nonprofit advancement. As Associate Dean for Institutional Advancement at the CUNY School of Medicine, she serves on the Dean’s Cabinet and is the principal advisor on all philanthropic strategy, communications, marketing, and public relations. Ms. Malcolm formerly served as Vice President for Institutional Advancement & Chief Operating Officer of the Borough of Manhattan Community College Foundation, where she played a central role in securing the historic $30 million MacKenzie Scott gift – the largest in U.S. community college history at the time; as Executive Director of the Hunter College High School Alumnae/i Association; Assistant Dean of Development and Alumni Relations at Temple University’s College of Engineering. She also built fundraising plans and donor engagement at the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Phoenix, at New York University’s Tandon School of Engineering, and at the National Urban League.
INSTITUTIONAL GIVING: EFFECTIVE FOUNDATION AND CORPORATE PARTNERSHIPS
Presented by: Dana Friedman, Vice President of Advancement and External Engagement, The Door

- Grant writing, compliance, and reporting
- Creating and managing sponsorship opportunities
Dana Friedman is Vice President of Advancement and External Engagement at The Door and Broome Street Academy, overseeing institutional giving, communications, and external partnership strategy. She is responsible for stewarding a combined portfolio of private foundation and government support totaling $25 million annually. Reporting to the Chief Advancement Officer, Dana serves as a deputy and senior advisor and ensures alignment between The Door’s mission, voice, and external engagement. She supervises the Director of Institutional Giving and the Director of Communications and Marketing, and acts as the connective tissue between program, data, communications, and fundraising teams to integrate strategy, storytelling, and measurable outcomes. Dana previously headed institutional giving at Educational Alliance and the Lower East Side Tenement Museum and began her career in corporate relations at Boston Children's Hospital. She holds a B.A. in Sociology from Simmons College.
INDIVIDUAL GIVING: PRINCIPLES AND PRACTICES
Presented by: Lara Torsky, Senior Director of Individual Giving, Open Space Institute (OSI).

- Goal-setting and management of multi-channel annual fund appeals
- Stewardship, cultivation, and solicitation techniques
- Special campaigns and patron groups

Lara Torsky is the Senior Director of Individual Giving at the Open Space Institute (OSI). With nearly 15 years of experience in development, she has worked in a variety of sectors including independent schools and higher education, as well as arts and culture and land conservation. With experience in annual giving, major gifts planning, campaign strategy, and board development, Lara has seen the difference that each gift – no matter the size – can make and the transformative impact that comes when each one of us does what we can. Lara holds a B.A. in Psychology from the University of Maryland, an M.A. from New York University in Humanities and Social Thought, and an M.A. in Women’s Studies from the University of Maryland, where she also pursued Doctoral Studies.
